REC

sir,

REG 9 FEB 181

I attach a copy of my letter of the 8th.

August last, eddressed to the Honourable the Diraoter

of Public Works, on the subject of the vacancy created

in consequence of the lǝavə granted to Mr. A. F. Churchill,

1st. Aasistant Director of Public Works, and his raply

thereto, with which I regret to say I am not satisfied.

The concluding paragraph of my letter of

the 8th. August was written on the assumption that such

an appointment would have followed the usual course, and

a reference of ao amall a matter to you would not then

have been necessary.

The initial salaries of both the Assistant

Directors are of the same valus, so that no financial

benefit would follow a promotion from 2nd. Assistent

to 1st. Assistant whilst acting. My promotion, on the

other hand, would mean an ingresso at the rate of £75

per annum whilst acting.

In my letter of the 8th. August I sketched

my career from 1900. I may add that I was appointed

at the end of 1896 and arrived in January 1897 to join

this

The Right Honourable

Walter H. Long, M. P.

His Majesty's Principal Secretary of State

for the Colonies.
